Lucas Gelder's American dream
About Dedication
Dedication is what makes our country run. The common worker and their dedication to make money for themselves or their family. The dedication of the entrepreneur to make a profit from his business and earn a living in this world makes the American dream come true. Often times those who are rich are the ones who have worked the hardest to get that wealth, that job, or that position. They have worked their entire lives to become a self-made person whose goal was to make their own life. My american dream is to make my own path in life
ABOUT ME
How I built a jet suit by Richard Browning
https://www.ted.com/talks/richard_browning_how_i_built_a_jet_suit/transcript
In this ted talk, Richard Browning discusses his journey of building a feasible jet suit. He describes his various reasons for starting this endeavor, citing that he wanted to make his dad proud, and that he hopes that his father is smiling down upon him during this. This sets the stage for what’s to come, his father was an inventor, but he took his own life when Richard was only 15.
Later on in Richards life, he wanted to do something unique, something different in the approach to flight. He wanted to augment the human body, it’s made in nature, so he simply tried to improve upon it by mechanical means. He started by buying a micro gas turbine engine, the building block of his project. He tried different configurations of the placement of the gas turbines, but it was when he managed to have a “first six-second, reasonably coherent flight.” (Richard Brownings 2:57) that he began to think that "Oh my god, it does work!" (Richard Brownings 3:31) That was the beginning of the true project, that was when the momentum began to build in his mind. His hopes and dreams were beginning to take form in front of him, and it increased his drive to complete this even more. This is his dream, to live up to the unfulfilled potential his father left behind, to break past the norms and the standard measures.
I can connect this to our discussion of the American dream, he may not be American, or even live in America, but he has his own dream, his own goals, and he goes after them with everything he’s got. To me, that represents what the American dream is. To have your own goal and to push past your obstacles, to beat at whatever holding you back until you have your dream in your own two hands. I can really connect this to Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In the book, Gatsby is a rich man made by his own means, and he wants to find someone from his past and to be with him, with his money to impress her and to support their lifestyle. Now whether his money was gained legally or not is up for debate, but he used what resources where available to him, and he used them effectively.
Personally, I really like this speech, because it shows that any person can reach for their dreams and make it reality. The only catch is that you must work for it, that nothing will be handed to on a sliver plate, and that you must always push forward, to never give up hope. For when hope dies out, the American Dream is truly lost forever. That is what I take away from this, that hope is fragile, but it will support any dream if hope is kept in our hearts.

A robot that eats pollution by Jonathan Rossiter
www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_rossiter_a_robot_that_eats_pollution
In this TED talk, Jonathan talks about how there are many different types of robots, and how some of them can be used. He speaks of their limitations and how that both differ and draw from natural organisms. His first big statement was that we have robots that can eat pollution, and use it to move and eat more pollution, like a natural organism. It is here where he gets into more detail on how we could use this to limit the effects of things such as oil spills and algae bloom, that these robots can be used to help in an effective way. He names it the Row-bot, from its paddles used for propulsion through the water. He came up with the concept of the Row-bot by combining characteristics of the basking shark and the water boatman, using the open mouth from the basking shark, and the paddles from the water boatman. He speaks in wonder of what is possible with robots, the endless possibilities. This is a part of his dream, to help others realize the wonder he sees, and to set the spark of creation in everyone’s minds.
I can connect this to The Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson wanted to create a document that would declare a new country, a document that would shake the world to it very core. The thought of independence and freedom from an empire such as Great Britain? It was unthinkable and regarded as impossible. Rossiter is similar, he wanted to show the world the potential he saw in these robots, what good we can do with them, all the problems these Row-bots could potentially solve. Many regard this as impossible, that it would be too expensive or that our current technology can’t support this crazy idea of a fleet of these 1ft by 1ft robots cleaning up a massive algae bloom or oil spill. Jonathan wants to prove them wrong, he wants to share his dream with the world and show that this is possible, despite the odds.
This connects to the American Dream in a very clean way. Rossiter wants to show the world the wonder of robots, and to get people thinking about ideas they have never thought off, way outside of the box. Too me, his dream seems to be to drive our imaginations past the confines of our own boxes, and to push our thoughts to the future and what it could possibly hold.
I really like this TED talk, it was a very interesting topic, and Jonathan was very enthusiastic speaker on this subject. He spoke to the audience and me, and started a spark of curiosity and wonder for ideas that are crazy past the norm. He seemed to speak from his heart and soul, and tried his hardest to inspire the sense of wonder he felt inside of himself and put inside of others. The fact that even the craziest ideas can be realized is an idea that I will be carrying with me for a very long time. The will to carry on and do your best is an idea that I believe he wants to be every second he can.

How to defend earth from asteroids by Phil Plait
https://www.ted.com/talks/phil_plait_how_to_defend_earth_from_asteroids/
Phil talks about an event that occurred about 65 million years ago, something that changed the face of the planet for forever. The 6-kilometer-wide asteroid slammed into what is now the Yucatan peninsula, and wiped out 75% of all plant and animal life off the surface and out of the sea. This is a frightening reality of the planets past, where asteroids are hitting earth a causing mass amounts of damage and loss of life. Fortunately, nothing of that sort has occurred in the past couple of millennia, however, one never knows what may happen next. Phil talks about previous impacts and explosions caused by asteroids entering our atmosphere. He then tells us what we can do to make sure an asteroid wont impact our planet. Phil says we start out by identifying and tracking asteroids around us, any that could potentially hit us. The second step is moving them out of the way, which can be done by either hitting it with a heavy enough object travelling at decent speeds, or using a small probe and using it to slowly edge the asteroid away from our planet, or to even put it into orbit around the earth! Mr. Plait was very excited and talkative about this subject, he seems to enjoy speaking about this subject very much and clearly knows a good bit about the subject at hand.
I can connect this to the American Dream by taking what he seems to be very passionate about, and how he speaks about it. His way of speech is very excitable, he clearly likes to discuss what he does. Perhaps his dream is to let the world know that we have a plan for asteroids, so that “Sixty-five million years from now, we don't have to have our bones collecting dust in a museum.” (Phil Plait 13:55) Maybe his dream is to just spread the idea of his job around, to get others interested in outer space and what’s in it. The world may never know what Phil’s dream is, but he certainly does, and he is working very hard to get it. That is the ideal of the American dream, to work hard for what you want. For working hard every day to protect our celestial body among our solar system. Maybe to even protect humanity itself.
I was very much interested in what Mr. Plait had to say, and I am glad to say that I was not very disappointed at all. It was a rather interesting speech with a good backstory in history, and a few truly ingenious ways to prevent an asteroid from hitting earth. I have learned that sometimes life isn’t really about things just down here in the air, sea, or land, but it is simply everywhere, including outer space of all things.

What is feels like seeing earth from space by Benjamin Grant
https://www.ted.com/talks/benjamin_grant_what_it_feels_like_to_see_earth_from_space#t-700039
The astronauts on Apollo 8 saw earth from the moon for the first time, and they were completely astounded by what they saw. This experience is called the overview effect, and so far, a total of 558 people have ever experienced this. A study done has shown that seeing the earth from space makes people build new cognitive frameworks, just to try and understand what they are seeing, the absolute wholeness that they were never truly able to understand. Until now, when the astronauts see that spectacular view, and they just stare in awe. And when these astronauts reach land again, they feel more connected to earth, and all the life on it. This is what Benjamin Grant wants everyone to experience, the overview effect, to make them connect with each other and be humans together, regardless of race, gender, or nationality. He calls his project, “Daily Overview”
I can connect this to Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, by tying it in with Gatsby’s desire to see Daisy and to get her to be with him. Jay Gatsby is a very determined man, willing to do whatever it takes to impress Daisy and to get her to be back with him, just like they were 5 years previously. Benjamin Grant is likewise a seemingly determined man, trudging through a giant database just to find the perfect picture to try and induce this overview effect. Mr. Grant’s dream seems to be to connect people by this shared sense of connection, by showing just how small they are, and show how no matter how small they are, that they make a huge impact upon this earth. I may not agree on all the topics he discussed, or have extra information for him to chew on, but I respect his dream to try and bring us all together as one human race, on our little anthill floating in space.
This is a rather easy speech to connect to the American dream, for it was full of emotion and hope. Benjamin Grant has a dream to bring all human together through an awe-inspiring view, to create new cognitive framework that will draw us all together, and that is the basis of the American dream. To make your own dream for your own reasons and drive for it, endlessly until you can hold your own genuine dream in your own two hands.
This speech to me was excellent, me and Mr.Grant may have opposing viewpoints on certain subjects, but I completely respect him and his dream, because I believe that dream to be a noble dream to try and achieve. And that is what I will be taking away from this speech, that sometimes you may disagree with someone, but it doesn’t mean they are automatically evil, or that they can never have a good idea. People are people, and people are different, yet still connected
